is what I would say if my name were really Eloise. And if my name were Judy, I would’ve been born in a trunk. But, no. I am Zachary. The name comes from the chronology of the alphabet; ‘Z’ signifies the end. The third, youngest, and, if you ask me, favorite child of my darling parents. I fancied myself as Gretl in The Sound of Music; last because I was the “most important.” I spent my childhood filling my mind with any and every movie musical I could get my hands on. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Singin’ In the Rain, and My Fair Lady to name a few of the favorites. I took to the stage, for the first time, the summer after second grade. That’s when the real love affair began. Performing was, and still is, an outlet for me to exude unimaginable joy and hopefully bring a little bit to others. Every time I am on stage, it is a love letter to every star I idolized as a little boy, watching one of his favorite movies, and hoping that I might do the same for someone else.

Gene

Kelly

Gene Kelly paved his own way. He created a brand new wheel that worked for him. He exudes athleticism and masculinity while existing in this effeminate world of love stories and musical theatre. His performances are so effortless and pedestrian that you cannot help but relate to him. He not only inspires me as a performer, but as a teacher, choreographer, director, and creator. I could only dream to leave a minor fraction of the legacy he has left on this world.

Judy

Garland

I’m told that when I was very little, I would tell my parents I wanted to watch “blue dress”. They later learned that that meant I wanted to watch The Wizard of Oz. When I was a kid, a mentor of mine gave me a bracelet on opening night of our first show together. It said “WWJD”. She then explained to me, “what would Judy do?”. Judy Garland has been my muse for as long as I can remember. Her honesty, her joy, and her heart are just a few of the many things I try to emulate in every performance I give. Her story empowers me everyday to be the truest version of myself and to go on singing.

George

Chakiris

West Side Story is my favorite musical. With that came my love for George Chakiris. George started as a chorus boy, dancing next to incomparable leading ladies such as Marilyn Monroe, Rosemary Clooney, and Judy Garland. He went from chorus boy land to leading man-dom; singing and dancing on Broadway and West End before landing his Oscar-winning role of Bernardo in West Side Story. In reading his recent memoir, I learned how grateful, humble, and inspirational this man truly is. I hope to follow in his footsteps.
